How to overcome negative self-talk

All of us talk to ourselves all the time. When you walk through the store, you say things to yourself about what you think people are thinking about you. When you are doing your job, you tell yourself how you think you are doing at your job. When you get dressed in the morning, you tell yourself how you think you look. If these messages are negative, it will have a detrimental impact on your negative health. Below are a few steps to start getting control of your self-talk.

1. Listen to your self-talk

Make a note of what you are saying to yourself about yourself. Write down a list of things that you notice that you say to yourself often.

2. Challenge bad messages

Most of the things that are negative that we say to ourselves are not true. We exaggerate the negatives. We try to read other people’s minds. We don’t have evidence to support most of our negative self-talk. The truth is usually much less negative and more balanced view of ourselves.

3. Replace the negative with positive messages

Find some messages that are true and are positive about yourself. If you find that you often say negative things about your appearance, try to find something you like about yourself and use it to balance that negative self-talk.
