Seven Ways To Prepare For Your Therapy Session

Despite being a safe and appropriate space for processing, opening up in a counseling session can be anxiety-producing for many individuals.

There may be concerns that are intimidating to begin to discuss and topics that are difficult to begin to put into words. Missed opportunities, second-guessing, omission of information, and more can all impact the accuracy of the care that is offered in counseling services.

At Counseling and Wellness Center, we strive to provide tailor-made treatment plans specific to your unique and individual experience in life. To get the most out of your time in therapy and receive the best support and care, here are a few ways to prepare for your walk toward wellness:

  1. Start Small - Just getting in the door is a big step! You can work your way toward more emotionally charged topics down the road.

  2. Create a plan - Between sessions, make note of significant events and feelings that you would like to address in your next visit

  3. Be intentional - Choose an optimal appointment time when scheduling for consistency of care. Try a time of day when you are most likely to feel ready to share.

  4. Use Examples - Sharing content that you relate to can help your therapist better understand

  5. Write a letter - If verbal processing is proving to be challenging, try writing a letter that can be referenced during your next session

  6. Challenge yourself - Growth usually occurs just beyond our comfort level

  7. Lastly, know you are not alone
