What is Burnout?

Burnout is more than just feeling tired at work. It’s an emotional, mental, and physical reaction to constant stress. When work demands constantly pile up, it takes a toll on you. You might start to feel unappreciated and overworked. Here are some signs that you may be experiencing burnout from your job:

1. Feeling of Exhaustion – Burnout exhaustion may leave you feeling tired no matter how much sleep you get. You may find yourself feeling unable to relax, getting or feeling sick more frequently, feeling listless, and lack of motivation in both work and non-work areas of life.

2. Reduced Sense of Accomplishment – What once brought you satisfaction at work, no longer feels as fulfilling. You may feel that the work you do doesn’t matter, or struggle to feel connected to the mission or purpose of your labor.

3. Reduced Efficiency at Work – With burnout, you may notice your work efficiency and performance dropping. This can look like dreading meetings, avoiding completing tasks, feeling uninterested in continuing education, or simply feeling lost and disconnected from the work.

4. Loss of Personal Identity – Following the disconnection from work, you start questioning why you’re doing what you’re doing. You may find yourself questioning your own values, purpose, and direction in life. Days may start to feel like they are blending together.

5. Feeling Under-appreciated – You may start to believe that your company or coworkers do not value you. It is not uncommon to feel overworked and under-appreciated. This can lead to a buildup of anger and resentment.

Let’s go a little deeper than resting on the weekends or days off. How do you feel at the end of the day? Do you feel accomplished, appreciated, and proud of the work you do?
