Couples and Relationships
Many couples find that love alone is not enough to build and sustain a positive relationship. Issues of intimacy, sexual communication and performance can be very challenging. Past experience, insecurity or feelings about dependence and control can create huge stumbling blocks for lovers. A fulfilling relationship can be eroded quickly by shame, blame and guilt. Adult life often bears little resemblance to the closely held fairy tales and rose colored fantasies of childhood.
Helping couples establish realistic expectations for themselves and for each other is one of the most important ways that counselors help couples build an enduring relationship. With qualified assistance, troubled lovers can discover and develop new communication skills, and learn how to listen and solve problems together. Mediation can help couples come to agreement on specific conflicts they're having, and learn ways to better resolve future disputes themselves.
