Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder, once known as manic depressive illness, is a serious condition that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy and functioning. Lives and relationships are easily ruined by this disorder and the symptoms can be severe and life threatening. Abnormally elevated or high mood, an over inflated self esteem, decreased need for sleep, constant talking, racing thoughts, and physical agitation are often seen in the ?up? state. The depressive state is characterized by a persistent sad mood, insomnia or oversleeping, loss of interest and energy, feelings of worthlessness and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide. A severe episode may be marked by psychotic symptoms including hallucinations or delusions.

A number of medications are used to treat bipolar disorder, so finding the appropriate drug or an effective combination of drugs is critical. Combining psychotherapy with the medication can provide additional benefit.
